"Unexpected Light"

I grew up in the city of Leningrad, (former Soviet Union) and was surounded by a beautiful French and Italian architecture of the 18 century. Many buildings in the center of the city were connected by these intetwining dark courtyards... People faced dimly lit yards that one couldn't not get out of at times. Barely any light would enter their communal apartments even during the day... For the inhabitants of these buildings, these courtyards seemed menacing and a nusance... For an artistic eye, they were a treasure. 

I used a palette knife to create the texture of the old worn buildings...
